Crete is the best place to learn about and immerse oneself in the Mediterranean diet. The Cretan diet is based on fresh, locally grown food, and is considered the original Mediterranean diet. Cretans eat lots of fruits and vegetables, wild greens (horta), whole grains, legumes, olive oil, and moderate amounts of fish and meat. The island is covered in olive trees, and Cretans consume more olive oil per person than probably anywhere on earth. Also, the food is SO delicious that I keep coming back just for the food, the high-quality olive oil, and warm hospitality of the people!
